TURKEY POINT COOLING CANALS SYSTEM Quarterly Progress Report No.
10 June 30, 1974 This report covers activities for the period April 1 through June 30, 1974.
Good progress'as made on the project with an overall completion of 95.4 pezcent.
~WEA HER 1
This quarter brought mostly southeasterly winds with an average wind speed of approximately 15 miles per hour, gusting up to 25 miles per hour.
Recorded rainfall was 13.1 inches; average temperature was 79 degrees; barometric pressure averaged 29.90 inches and the relative humidity averaged 76 percent.
ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION During this period, I.M.A. maintenance, utility, survey,'esearch and development and support personnel were responsible for the following:
Cooling Tower operation; cooling canal maintenance; throttling and balancing the canal system; engineering design and construction of permanent structures; Interceptor Ditch pumping; deep well monitoring; -daily cooling canal monitoring; monthly Bay monitoring; construction equipment maintenance; berm revege-tation, natural and induced; coordination of non-resident monitor-ing agencies; and coordination of subcontractors'ctivities.
I.M.A. forces have cont.inued to operate the cooling tower and power spzay modules on a weekly alternating schedule and will continue to do so until July 15 as requested by FP6L and the EPA.
The Bantam crane has assisted in the construction of throttles during this period.
To date, some twelve throttles have been built and Station -51 and 0+00. and 8,000 rip-rap bags have been placed so the throttles do not erode due to velocities increasing caused by restriction of canal widths.
Throttling has been completed at Station -51 and 0+00 and further throttling criteria is being awaited.
The 15B amphibious dragline has been cleaning muck slides in Canal 31 West.
These slides occurred during the original excavation.
During this period, the abutments for the collector bridge were completed and the bridge relocated to its new position.
The Lake Warren control structure was removed and a permanent fillcrossing was made.
Pilings were installed for permanent water line crossings at the Air Force and the Boy Scout Camp.
The sprinkler system

ENGINEERXNG AND CONSTRUCTION Continued) for the McGregor Smith monument area 'and Units 1 and 2 switchyard area was begun as was the new 4" potable water line to the cooling tower and proposed Boy Scout Camp area.
The Interceptor Ditch pumps have continued to xun for 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
a day, seven days a wee'k and have been monitored and serviced by I.M.A. personnel.
During this period, I.M.A. research and development laboratory pexsonnel continued cultivation and maintenance of the organic gardening plots on the muck berms in the cooling canal system for the induced berm revegetation program.
Vegetable, flower seeds and cuttings planted during this time included the following:
watermelon, canteloupe, heliotrope, 'adish, moon flower, marigold, chrysanthemum, sweet potatoe,
- bean, portulaca,
- alyssum, beet and zoysia grass.
Soil samples from the muck berms were taken and analyzed in the lab for their nutrient contents.
Charting of four quadrats of variant vegetative types in conjunction with the natural revegetation program was performed.
R & D personnel supported Dames
& Moore with ground water monitoring and performed velocity studies in conjunction with the cooling canal throttling pxogx'am o
Drilling at the South Dade site continued at Observation Well B and at the Key Largo site.
Drilling at 'both sites was discontinued fox a period of time as PP&L and Alsay had some contractural dispute.
Drilling has resumed at. the Observation Mell B only which is now to a depth of 1500 feet with 5 inch well casing set to that depth.
This well is scheduled.
to reach the 1700 foot target depth on July 2 and the operation will then move to the Key Largo site.
Dames
& Moore continued regular well monitoring, Interceptor Ditch monitoring, first of the month well monitoring, deep well monitoring and installation of instrumentation in the South Dade research area.
Environmental Systems continued to ta'ke daily ambient air samples as the cooling tower and power spray modules operated 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
a day, seven days a week.
