[External_Sender] consolidated Interim storage facility To: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Holtec-CISFEIS@NRC.gov From: Sheila Murphy, Geraldine Murphy, Cornelia Murphy and Jody Grittman Re: Consolidated Interim Storage Facility We find it unconscionable and are appalled that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is considering it to be in the nations best interest for New Mexico to host a "temporary" holding facility for high level nuclear waste from extra-state power reactors. 99% of the reactors in this nation are east of the Mississippi. The waste should stay in the states that use nuclear power. We have received no benefit from these reactors, but are expected to meekly store dangerous waste based on the statements of a greedy corporation.
Moving radioactive waste from one temporary storage facility to another is a ridiculous waste of tax payer money.
It is dangerous and seems to be just a way for Holtec to make money at the expense of our state, our lands, national safety and the lives of the local people, as well as the people all along the transportation routes.
We are against this.
None of this waste should transported at all. Keep it where it is and make those places safer and/or permanent.
How will this high level radioactive waste affect:
Transportation lines, both railway and highway during transport Land Agriculture Wildlife Local culture Tourism Oil and gas industries Safety from terrorist attacks, both home grown and foreign Accidents
2 Dairy farmers Water quality 20,000 existing jobs (comparably Holtec is proudly offering 55total)
Removing this waste from its current storage facilities, will create risks to the health and economic well being of the people employed to prepare it for transport.
Every single person along the transportation route will be exposed to potential harm. This includes the transportation workers and the people of every single town and city, farm or residence the radioactive cargo passes. When there is an accident, how far will the radioactive spill travel? For this answer please refer to Chernobyl, Fukushima, groundwater pollution under Kirtland Airforce base, Hanford Washington and the list goes on and on.
Once this temporary storage is created, New Mexico will bear the unfair burden of this waste forever. Radiation is not temporary.
No matter how much Holtec pays, it will never be enough. Health cannot be rebuilt from radiation poisoning.
Ground water and rivers cannot be cleaned up. Land and crops will be destroyed and unusable, ruining peoples livelihoods.
Do not ruin our lives, our environment or our economy based on the promised profits from a private corporation that cannot be trusted and will change the rules when their bottom line is threatened.
Sincerely, Sheila Murphy, Geraldine Murphy, Cornelia Murphy and Jody Grittman
