Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission Staff:
Aside from the obvious transportation difficulties and dangers, there is another reason why a centralized radioactive waste site is not the answer to the problem. That is when the various states who depend on nuclear power see that there is a way to evade the storage dilemma (by giving it to someone else), they will have no incentive to cease or even reduce depending on nuclear power. Everyone should see the obvious by now; nucs are NOT the energy source of the future; they are only a stopgap measure (and a poor one) to bridge from coal and petroleum to renewables.
Your job is (or should be) to become obsolete and unnecessary and be an advocate for public safety, which means the phasing out of nuclear power. The fact that there is very little interest in financing nucs and any current plan, as far as I am aware, depends on the public financing these projects should make it clear that this is not the direction we should be moving. You also have the responsibility for nuclear weapons; should you be an advocate for increasing our weapons capability just because it brings the agency more importance and power? Please consider your proper role in these matters and act in a responsible manner.
