[External_Sender] Docket ID NRC-2018-0052 Greetings from West Texas. I appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts with you.
First, I would like to say that I appreciate your visits to the West Texas/Eastern New Mexico area. I'm sure these visits and community forums must be tiresome for you, as you hear the same things over and over. You do a great job of maintaining poker faces. Either that, or you're bored stiff, which would be understandable.
This news release came out two days ago, and this is what I want to talk to you about:
Texas to pass Iraq and Iran as world's No. 3 oil powerhouse Texas to pass Iraq and Iran as world's No. 3 oil powerhouse Matt Egan The shale oil boom has brought a gold rush mentality to Texas, home to two massive oilfields.
This small area of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico, the Permian Basin, is responsible for more oil production than entire countries. As such, its value in production is quantifiably huge. Unfortunately, all that production has led to instability in the ground, and sinkholes are appearing in a lot of places. The oil companies are keeping it quiet - I know this because people talk about it in hushed tones for fear of losing their jobs if they talk about it - so you won't hear a whole lot about it.
People have too much of a vested interest in keeping it quiet, because oil is what puts food on the tables here. But please do your research on this subject. Get real information on the geological impact of fracking. If you want a stable place to put the waste, this area is not it.
