[External_Sender] Proposed Lea County nuclear dump I am sending my comment re. the proposed Holtec International plan to transport 10,000 rail cars, of highly radioactive nuclear material, over a span of 20 years to a long term, temporary storage site in Lea County, New Mexico. Sending such dangerous material via rail is a risky proposition. In the past 3 years alone there have been seven train accidents in New Mexico, several involving derailments & wrecks. I reside in Las Cruces, New Mexico, the second largest city in the state, with a steadily growing population. Trains pass right through our urban area, so any kind of mishap, could spell disaster for our citizens, for our surrounding environment, for the health, & life of future generations. This material, after-all has a long-half-life. Who will be responsible for the stored waste in the long term? Can we be certain, that this dangerous material won't leach into the earth, effecting aquifers, contaminating, air, earth, & water, for hundreds of years. A transport by train, makes this radioactive material more easily available to any would-be terrorist, thereby putting our entire nation at risk! A safer, & saner, solution, must be found for the storage of these left-over products of our nuclear industry. These materials are safer, remaining in place, with a more secure, closely monitored containment, engineered on site, rather than putting a whole country at risk, along the train route. Please, vote no on this proposed dump, or at the very least, allow more time for a thorough environmental, study to be conducted, with clear plans made for the very long-term. I fear that this plan is not well thought out & that human error & oversight, is bound to take place, resulting in a very dangerous, tragic outcome. Sincerely, Gloria L Hacker
