Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR)

Items of Interest Week Ending July 13, 2018 Vogtle Electric Generating Plant Seismic Mitigating Strategies Assessment On July 10, 2018, the staff issued its assessment (ADAMS Accession No. ML18180A314) of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2, seismic mitigating strategies assessment (MSA). This was the first Path 5 seismic MSA. Path 5 refers to plants for which the ground motion response spectrum has spectral ordinates greater than two times the safe shutdown earthquake anywhere in the 1 to 10 hertz frequency range. A Path 5 MSA is used to demonstrate that a seismic probabilistic risk assessment based alternate mitigating strategy (AMS) can be implemented considering the impacts of the reevaluated seismic hazard. The staff concluded that the MSA was performed consistent with the NRC-endorsed guidance and that the licensee demonstrated that the AMS, if appropriately implemented, is reasonably protected from reevaluated seismic hazard conditions.

Peach Bottom Subsequent License Renewal Application On July 10, 2018, the Exelon Generation Corporation submitted its subsequent license renewal application requesting renewal of the operating licenses for the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3, for an additional 20 years. The operating licenses for Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3, were initially renewed on May 7, 2003, with current expiration dates of August 8, 2033, and July 2, 2034, respectively. The NRC will review the application to determine if the application is sufficient and acceptable for docketing in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Sections 2.101, 51.45, 51.53(c), 54.19, 54.21, 54.22, and 54.23. If it is found to be sufficient, the staff will begin their more detailed review of the application.
