2 IE BULLETIN NO. 77-07 DOCKET NO. 50-397

Letter, R.

H. Engelken to N. 0. Strand, Same Subject, December 19, 1977.

Dear Mr. Engelken:

The referenced letter transmitted the subject IE Bulletin.

In response to the questions asked in IE Bulletin No. 77-07, our AE reports that the WPPSS Project WNP-2 will use Westinghouse penetrations, identification numbers WX32647 through WX32652 which are similar to those included in the IE Bulletin.

The transition connector pins are coated with an insulation varnish to

, provide an insulating jacket in the space used for monitoring leakage.

In the seal

area, the bare pins are embedded in epoxy.

All of the penetrations ordered from Westinghouse have been shipped.

Westinghouse shipped the penetrations pressurized at 15 osig but stated that this pressure need not be maintained provided that the insulation resistance meets requirements after installation.

These penetrations are designed and qualified per IEEE 317 to function during and after a

LOCA without requiring internal pressurization.

Results of tests provided by Westinghouse will insure compliance with the Commissions regulations (GDC4, Appendix A and Appendix B to Part 50).

WPPSS will check insulation resistance at time of installation and

, thereafter maintain.a positive internal pressure.

.M Et Mr. R. H. Engelken Page Two WPPSS has additionally instructed our AE to evaluate the need for an interconnecting manifold to maintain pressurization on all electrical penetrations for convenience of 'pressurization maintenance.

If there are further questions, please advise.

Very truly yours, DLR:GLC:ct D. L.
