[External_Sender] Fuel rod burial site at WIPP Comments Storing spent fuel rods, which are highly radioactive in spite of the term "spent", at the WIPP site is foolish. Any site that buries nuclear fuel rods should be built from the beginning to hold these particular nuclear waste products. The industry comment is always, "as long as you are careful, dealing with the waste from nuclear energy is safe." Given that, modifying an existing site which was not built with fuel rods in mind is mind boggling.Storing spent fuel rods in hardened cask storage on the site where they were used is by far the safest option.

We have created a waste that has no safe storage over the time span it is dangerous, so it is imperative that we choose our options wisely. That means keeping it on site where it was produced, not moving it around the country by rail or truck. Dr. Ed Lyman of the Union of Concerned Scientists said in a recent speech, "Security of spent fuel during transport is...a great concern. Transportation is the weakest link in the security chain."

Storing spent fuel rods in hardened cask storage on the site where they were used is by far the safest option. Please refuse Holtec license to implement their money-making scheme at the the expense of the public's safety and welfare.

Sincerely, Cynthia Weehler Cindy Weehler Energía Mía cnthweehler@gmail.com 505-557-6444 (home) 512-838-3351 (cell)
