Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR)

Items of Interest Week Ending June 1, 2018 Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Submittal of the Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report On May 21, 2018, Exelon submitted its Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report (PSDAR) for Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in accordance with 10 CFR 50.82 and an update to its Spent Fuel Management Plan (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession Nos.: ML18141A775 and ML18141A486). The PSDAR indicates the licensee selected the SAFSTOR decommissioning option and provides the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the public a general overview and schedule of the licensees proposed decommissioning activities, a site specific decommissioning cost estimate, the projected cost of managing irradiated fuel, and addresses environmental impacts associated with the decommissioning option selected. The PSDAR will help the NRC plan for inspections and make decisions about its decommissioning oversight activities. The staff is preparing to publish the PSDAR for comment in the Federal Register and is planning to conduct a public meeting near the plant in July.

National Organization for Test, Research, and Training Reactors Public Meeting On May 22, 2018, the staff held a public meeting with the National Organization for Test, Research, and Training Reactors (TRTR). Significant topics of discussion included upcoming rulemakings, operator licensing exams, digital instrumentation and control license amendment requests, quality assurance programs related to transportation, and potential topics for the upcoming TRTR Annual Conference in October. The Nuclear Energy Institute participated in the meeting, emphasizing the value of the staff creating a website that would list rulemakings affecting the TRTR community.

SHINE Medical Technologies Public Meeting On May 23 and 24, 2018, a public meeting was held between SHINE Medical Technologies, Inc. (SHINE) and the staff. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss topics related to construction planning, licensing strategy, and the results of a preliminary hazards analysis associated with the SHINE medical isotope production project. This meeting served to inform the staff of SHINEs significant facility design changes and schedules for beginning construction and submitting an operating license application. In preparation for fiscal year (FY) 2019 licensing and oversight activities, the staff will continue to meet with SHINE in pre-application and on-site scoping meetings throughout the remainder of FY 2018.
