SUMMARY
OF MAY 31, 2018 PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS NRC ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION INSPECTIONS On May 31, 2018, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff hosted a public meeting with the Nuclear Utility Group on Equipment Qualification (NUGEQ) and other industry representatives to discuss the on-going NRC Environmental Qualification (EQ) inspections per Inspection Procedure (IP) 71111.21N, Design Bases Assurance Inspection (Programs). The public meeting notice was issued on May 15, 2018 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML18135A306), and the purpose of the meeting was to discuss technical issues that need to be resolved relative to the ongoing EQ inspections.

SUMMARY
May 31, 2018 The public meeting notice was issued on May 15, 2018 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML18135A306), and the purpose of the meeting was to discuss technical issues that need to be resolved relative to the ongoing EQ inspections.
The NRC provided a presentation on NRC EQ Inspection Activities (ADAMS Accession No. ML18156A116). The NRC presentation included a discussion on EQ program background, EQ inspection objectives, EQ inspection results to date, and EQ Questions & Answers (Q&As). EQ Q&As were previously known as EQ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). A copy of the NRC EQ Q&As were included as an attachment to the public meeting notice (ADAMS Accession No. ML18145A072). The NRC presented that next steps include (1) continuing to closely assess inspection findings and Unresolved Items (URIs) through the use of a Headquarters/Cross-Regional EQ Panel, (2) finalizing and sharing the NRC EQ Q&As with inspection staff, and (3) continuing previously planned inspector backfit training.
The Nuclear Utility Group on Equipment Qualification (NUGEQ) then provided a presentation on NRC EQ Inspections (ADAMS Accession No. ML18156A121). The NUGEQ presentation included a discussion on the current inspection process, the licensing process and structure, and technical topics raised in the NRC EQ Q&As. NUGEQ also discussed utilizing commercial grade dedication for EQ applications and the use of Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.164, Dedication of Commercial-Grade Items for Use in Nuclear Power Plants (ADAMS Accession No. ML17041A206). The NUGEQ presentation indicated that discussions in the NRC EQ Q&As reflect different interpretations or positions or asserted requirements, which constitute either generic or plant-specific backfits. NUGEQ representatives indicated that they will provide a written response to the NRC EQ Q&As (within three weeks). The NRC indicated that it would review the NUGEQ written response prior to finalizing the NRC EQ Q&As.
