This refers to the NRC Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP)

Report for your Surry facility which was sent to you on June 9, 1992; our meeting on June 22, 1992, at which we discussed this report; and your written comments in_a l~tter dated July 13, 1992.

Thank you for your participation in the SALP meeting on June 22, 1992 and your review of the SALP report. Your response makes it clear that you and your staff intend to continue to strengthen those areas where challenges were identified.

Since you had no negative or corrective comments on the report, the Initial SALP Report \\ransmitted to you on June 9, 1992 becomes the Final SALP Report.

The enclosures consist of a meeting summary, the SALP presentation slides, and a copy of your written comments.

We were pleased to see many local officials, and members of the media at the SALP presentation. After the presentation the NRC met with the local officials and the media to reaffirm the NRC's role, as well as address any questions or items of mutual interest.

As we have noted In the past, we consider the SALP process to be a very useful and Important tool for both the NRC and Virginia Electric and Power Company In assessing and improving performance at our nuclear stations.

We believe we have made significant Improvements In performance at Surry during this SALP period, partleularty in the functional area of Plant Operations, and we appreciate the NRC'a recognition of this progress. We will make every effort to continue this positive perfo~mance, as well as strengthen our performance In those functlonal areas where challenges were identified. It is our intention to provide periodic status to you regarding our progress in these areas during future management meetings.
