DPR-32 NRC BULLETIN NO. 89-02: STRESS CORROSION CRACKING OF HIGH-HARDNESS TYPE 410 STAINLESS STEEL INTERNAL PRELOADED BOLTING IN ANCHOR DARLING MODEL S350W SWING CHECK VALVES OR VALVES OF SIMILAR DESIGN As described in our response dated January 15, 1990, 47 Velan check valves were evaluated as being within the scope of Bulletin 89-02 for Surry Power Station. These valves were scheduled to have their hanger bracket bolts inspected at the next available refueling outage of each unit.
Prior to the beginning of the Unit 1 Cycle 10 refueling outage, 6 of the original 47 valves were verified to have ASTM A193 Grade B8 or B8M bolting material installed and thus were eliminated from the scope of Bulletin 89-02. Inspection of the 22 Velan check valves that were installed in Unit 1 has been completed. Of the 22 subject Velan valves installed in Unit 1, 20 were verified to have ASTM A 193 B8 or B8M bolting material installed. For the remaining 2 valves, we were unable to verify that B8 bolting material was in.stalled and replaced the hanger bracket bolts with ASTM A 193
- 88 material.
No obvious defects or failures of the installed bolting material were observed.
The remaining 19 of the original 47 Velan check valves are installed in Unit 2 and are scheduled to be inspected during the Unit 2 Cycle 1 O refueling outage. The results of these remaining inspections will be provided to the NRC within 60 days of completion, as required by Bulletin 89-02.
