SURRY AND NORTH ANNA POWER STATIONS UNITS 1 AND 2 SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE 90-633 50-280 50-281 50-338 50-339 DPR-32 DPR-37 NPF-4 NPF-7 GENERIC LETTER 85-02, CONDENSER INSPECTION PROGRAM Generic Letter 85-02 provided recommended actions to address steam generator integrity issues.

Our response, dated June 17, 1985, included a commitment to develop a periodic inspection program for condenser tubes that was in excess of the requirements of the Generic Letter. This program included eddy current examination of a selected number of condenser tubes during each refueling outage based on historical records of condenser performance.

In light of improved condenser performance since our original response, performing condenser inspections every refueling outage, regardless of condenser performance, is no longer warranted. Consequently, we intend to perform condenser inspections only when leakage is of concern. Condenser leakage can be detected with the use of the on-line chemistry monitoring system. This system can analyze various chemistry parameters that indicate condenser leakage. Administrative controls are established so that corrective action can be taken based on the severity of the leakage. Corrective action may include removing a waterbox from operation, reducing power or plant shutdown. At a minimum, condenser inspections would be performed if leakage is of such magnitude that a power reduction corrective action is required more than once per three month period. This position is consistent with the Generic Letter.
