SUMMARY

OF APRIL 19, 1989 - MEETING TO DISCUSS FOLLOW-UP ON NRC BULLETIN NO. 80 MASONRY WALL DESIGN A meeting was held with representatives of the Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) in Rockville, Maryland on April 19, 1989.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the capability of the masonry walls to withstand a design basis seismic event and resolve the open issues under Bulletin No. 80-11.

A list of the attendees is enclosed.

The staff discussed VEPCO's calculations and found their approach to be conserva-tive. However, the NRC staff requested documentation of the as-built boundary conditions, available conservatisms, and field verifications applicable to VEPCO's analyses of the safety-related masonry walls at the Surry and North Anna sites.

VEPCO committed to identify and provide information on the masonry walls that had been analyzed as cantilever walls for the Surry and North Anna nuclear power plants.

This information will address boundary conditions and connections to other components that justify their classification as being non-cantilever masonry wa 11 s.

VEPCO will also list conservatisms in their design and analyses based on loads, boundary conditions,. and stress levels data.

Finally, VEPCO will identify details of field verifications, planned or completed, and schedule a site visit at the two facilities to inspect and verify the reported as-built conditions.
