SUMMARY

REPORT Pursuant to Technical Specification 4.19.F.b, Virginia Electric and Power Company is submitting the 1997 Steam Generator lnservice Inspection Summary Report for Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2.

During the March 1997 refueling outage for Surry Unit 1, the tubes in the "A" steam generator were examined, and during the October 1997 refueling outage for Surry Unit 2, the tubes in the "B" steam generator were examined. Attachments 1 and 2 provide the summaries of the results of those examinations, respectively.

The summaries include the number and extent of the tubes examined, location and characterization of each indication of an imperfection, and identification of tubes that were plugged. Attachment 3 provides a glossary of terms used in the report.

This letter does not establish any new commitments. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us.

Very truly yours, Support Attachments

ATTACHMENT 1 SURRY UNIT 1, MARCH 1997 REFUELING OUTAGE STEAM GENERATOR "A", EDDY CURRENT EXAMINATION

SUMMARY

In Steam Generator "A", all but three available tubes were inspected full length with bobbin probes. Three row one tubes (R1-C35, R1-C36, R1-C37) were plugged due to restrictions that would not allow the bobbin probe to pass *through. A 739 tube sample was tested with Rotating Pancake Coil (RPC) probes in the hot leg transition (TSH +/- 3")

region.

Supplemental examinations were also performed using RPC probes where additional confirmatory or other data was desired. The following tubes were plugged:

    • Preventively plugged due to indication of recent growth rate calculated at approximately 3.7% per fuel cycle since the last inspection of this tube based on a maximum indication of 25% through wall.
      • Preventively plugged; due to permeability variations, this tube is considered uninspectable.

ATTACHMENT 2 SURRY UNIT 2. OCTOBER 1997 REFUELING OUTAGE STEAM GENERATOR "B". EDDY CURRENT EXAMINATION

SUMMARY

In Steam Generator "B", all but two available tubes were inspected full length with bobbin probes. Two row one tubes (R1-C34, R1-C35) were plugged due to restrictions that would not allow the 0.720" bobbin probe to pass through. These two tubes did allow passage of a 0.680 probe. A 683 tube sample was tested with Rotating Pancake Coil (RPC) probes in the hot leg transition (TSH +/- 3") region. A twenty tube sample of the row 1 U-bends was examined with an RPC probe. Supplemental examinations were also performed using bobbin and RPC probes where additional confirmatory or other data was desired. The following tubes were preventively plugged:

ATTACHMENT 3 GLOSSARY OF TERMS *

1.

ROW, COL - COLUMN - Tube identifier numbers - an X-Y coordinate system.

2.

IND - INDICATION - Character codes and numerics that represent the analysis results of the data for that tube, e.g., RST, 25%, etc.

3.

LOCN - LOCATION - The location in the tube of the INDICATION identified.

4.

PVN - PERMEABILITY VARIATION - If extreme, may mask actual anomalies or indications.

5.

RST - RESTRICTED - Indicates that the probe listed in the record would not physically pass the location specified.

6.

55 - A number in the indication column shows the % through wall depth of the indication.

7.

AV1, AV2, AV3, AV4 -Anti-Vibration Bars 1 through 4.

Note: Where no comment appears in the remarks column the tube is still in service.
