SURRY NUCLEAR PLANT - NOTICE OF INTENTION TO CONDUCT DESIGN INSPECTION
Dear Mr. O'Hanlon:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of our plans to conduct a design inspection of the Surry nuclear facility. We have scheduled the onsite portion of the inspection for the periods of February 16 through 20, 1998; March 2 through 13, 1998; and March 23 through 27, 1998.
Your staff has indicated that there are no major conflicts with on-site activities during these periods. The team leader and two team members visited the site and corporate office during January 28 - 29, 1998, to collect documents for the team so that they can prepare for the on-site portion of the inspection.
Recent NRC inspections at nuclear power reactor facilities have identified numerous findings where the plant configuration or operations were inconsistent with the design basis, licensing basis, or the UFSAR. Therefore, the NRC has decided to perform design inspections at nuclear power reactor facilities utilizing Inspection Procedure (IP) 93801, "Safety System Functional Inspection." The safety injection and the recirculation spray systems were selected for review during the inspection.
Mr. James A. Isom, Team Leader, NRR, will interface with you and your staff regarding all
-matters related to this inspection. The inspection will be performed using a team of five
- engineers from Sargent & Lundy Engineering Corporation who have been contracted by the NRC for this purpose. Mr. Mansoor H. Sanwarwalla of Sargent & Lundy Engineering Corporation will be the lead contractor engineer.
