  • Attention: Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 Serial No.

98-1 OOA NL&OS/ETS R1 Docket Nos. 50-280/281 50-338/339 License Nos. DPR-32/37 NPF-4/7 EXEMPTION AND AUTHORIZATION REQUEST CLARIFICATION On March 27, 1997, Virginia Electric and Power Company requested specific authorization to use respiratory protection equipment which has not been tested and certified by NIOSH/MSHA to provide the proposed degree of protection under anticipated conditions of use. On March 15, 1998, we requested exemptions to permit use of the respiratory protection equipment (MSA Model 401, Ultralite or Custom 4500 SCBA) for routine and emergency use.

This letter is to clarify that the exemption requests are for use of MSA Model 401, Ultralite or Custom 4500 SCBA charged with 35% oxygen/65% nitrogen for routine and emergency use, excluding the MSA Model 401 for firefighting.

Should you have any questions regarding the exemption request, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours,

~?{Jy/~
