VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 ANNUAL STEAM GENERATOR INSERVICE INSPECTION

SUMMARY

REPORT Pursuant to Technical Specification 4.19.F.b for Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2, Virginia Electric and Power Company is submitting the results of the steam generator tube inservice inspections performed during 1998. The steam generator tube inspections conducted on Unit 1 during the Fall 1998 refueling outage are included in Attachment 1. There are no Unit 2 inspection results for 1998, since there was no corresponding refueling outage for Unit 2 in 1998 and no steam generator tube inspections were conducted.

This letter does not establish any new commitments. Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us.

  • Attachment 1 Abstract of Examinations Eddy Current Examinations Nonferromagnetic Steam Generator Tubing Surry Unit 1 Steam Generator "B" In Steam Generator "B," 3334 tubes were inspected full length with bobbin probes to test for general degradation. The plan also consisted of the following:
1. Hot leg top of tubesheet testing of 680 tubes with rotating pancake coil (RPC) to detect cracking;
2. Row 1 U-bend RPC testing of 19 tubes to detect cracking;
3. Plus point inspection of 4 tubes for characterization of anomalous signals; and
4. Ultrasonic (UT) inspection of 5 tubes for characterization of anomalous signals.*

Steam generator "B" had eight (8) plugged tubes at the beginning of the inspection, and six (6) tubes were plugged as a result of this inspection. Three tubes (Row 1-Column 58, Row 1-Column 59, and Row 1-Column 60) were preventively plugged due to restrictions which prevented complete inspection. The following tubes (Row 32-Column 14, Row 32-Column 16, and Row 33-Column 16) were preventively plugged due to indications at the hot leg side baffle plate. The indications were sized based upon bobbin results after they were characterized with a RPC probe as volumetric. In addition, one of these tubes (Row 33-Column 16) was further characterized with a rotating UT probe. The results of sizing of these indications, based on a qualified bobbin wear standard, shows all of these indications to be between 21 %-26% through wall.

No indications were reported that are significant to tube integrity. However, the following indications were reported during the inspection:
