PAUL'. S. SARBANES MARYLAND llnited ~tatts ~mate WASHINGTON, DC 20510 Lando Zech Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street, N.W.

Dear Mr. Zech:

April 11, 1988 The recent news reports citing the General Accounting Office study of pipe erosion/corrosion problems at nuclear power plants, including Calvert Cliffs unit 2 in Maryland, have raised some serious concerns among my constituents.

As Dr. Michael Glaser, a resident of St. Mary's City, points out in the enclosed letter, while we in Maryland have been fortunate in Calvert Cliffs' good safety record, there is a continuing need for vigilance and care as the facility ages.

I would appreciate any information you could provide regar9ing the erosion/corrosion problem at Calvert Cliffs and the steps that are being taken to address this problem.

With best regards,

~l:~

Dear Senator Sarbanes:

I was distressed and frightened today, on reading the Washington Post;(p. A3), to see a UPI report concerning the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's ignoring of pipe corrosion and erosion at nuclear power plants, including the one at Calvert Cliffs, Units 1 and 2.

We have ~een fortunate, in Southern Maryland, that there have been no serious problems at Calvert Cliffs, but as that facility gets older, constant attention and care must be paid because the possibilities of not only minor, but also major catastrophe increase.

I am writing to request that you look into this report and, if it is indeed true, that you take whatever actions you can to insure that those of us who live in Southern Maryland

<as well as all U.S. citizens who live near nuclear power plants) can be assured that pipe corrosion and erosion will be corrected so as to avoid any problems in the future.

I hope to hear from you concerning the problem and the actions you take.

If I can be of any assistance in this process, please let me know.

I appreciate your prompt attention to this very serious concern.

Sincerely, Dr. ~~

Michael S. Glaser I
