OF MAY 9, 2018, PUBLIC PHONE CALL WITH GENERAL ELECTRIC-HITACHI REGARDING AN ISSUE WITH THE GENERAL ELECTRIC-HITACHI GESAM COMPUTER PROGRAM On May 9, 2018, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a public telecom with representatives of General Electric-Hitachi (GE-H) to discuss an issue with GE-Hs GESAM Computer program. GESAM is an engineering computer program that performs the Monte Carlo statistical analysis. It was discovered that the GESAM program incorrectly reseeded the pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) with a returned random number. Two plants were affected in that their safety limit minimum critical power ratio (SLMCPR) increased slightly resulting in a rounding up. The increases were not significant with respect to margin of safety.
GE-H corrected the error in GESAM in March 2018. More information may be accessed from the Agency Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML18135A083. The NRC staff discussed the issue with representatives of GE-H and concluded that no issue exists.
