DANGEROUS, [VERY] UNNECESSARY "CENTRALIZED INTERIM STORAGE (CIS)" FACILITIES, WHICH ARE CURRENTLY PROPOSED FOR WESTERN TEXAS AND SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO!! Starting on April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear complex disaster was a [non-] nuclear fission-related explosion and fire at one of the reactors. There are plenty of explosions, fires, and other risks associated with highly radioactive irradiated ("spent/depleted') nuclear fuel in transport and storage, as proposed under the CIS scheme. At this time, our nation's big "Memorial Day Weekend Celebration" is about to start: Thousands of Americans will be traveling on the highways (and by-ways) both to and from their destinations. The phrases 'Mobile Chernobyls,' 'Dirty Bombs on Wheels,' and 'Fukushima Highways' colorfully point out the risks posed by highly radioactive waste truck and train shipments near our cities and farms. The phrase 'Floating Fukushimas' colorfully refers to the risks posed by highly radioactive waste barge shipments on our lakes and rivers. The CIS proposal would take even more radwaste than the proposed Yucca Mountain high-level radioactive waste repository site in Nevada, with corresponding larger numbers of higher-risk radwaste shipments through most states (unfortunately, including "Nuclear Illinois," which has more reactors and radwaste than any other state). SO, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE INSTEAD OF "CENTRALIZED INTERIM STORAGE?" (1) HARDENED ON-SITE STORAGE (HOSS)--Transferring highly radioactive waste from vulnerable storage pools into hardened dry casks as close to the reactor site as possible, which are designed to last centuries (not just decades), without leaking, safeguarded against accidents and natural disasters, and secured against sabotage/terrorism. (2) STOP PRODUCING Page 1 of 2 05/25/2018 https://www.fdms.gov/fdms/getcontent?objectId=09000064832e610c&format=xml&showorig=false 46/4*3FWJFX$PNQMFUF 5FNQMBUF"%.

ADDITIONAL RADIOACTIVE WASTE! All nuclear reactors should be shut down/phased out with deliberate speed, and no new reactors should be constructed. WE must speed up a smooth transition to a technically and economically feasible "'Carbon-Free/Nuclear-Free' Energy Pathway" (which produces NO highly radioactive wastes). This includes reassessing our real energy requirements; the full practical use of the best energy efficiency improvements; increasing combined heat-and-power (CHP), otherwise called co-generation; rapidly deploying well-designed/properly installed and sited distributed, appropriate renewable energy technologies; and creating an updated, 'smart' electricity grid with advanced energy storage techniques. This concludes my written comments! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to comment about this extremely important matter!
