WlLL/AML STEWART Vice President Nuclear Operations July 26, 1985 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:
Mr. Hugh L. Thompson, Jr., Director Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Nuclear Operations Department Post Office Box 26666 One fames River Plaza Richmond, Virginia 23261 VIRGINIA POWER Serial No.85-524 GLD: vdu:
2005N Docket Nos.:
50-280 50-281 50-338 50-339 License Nos.: DPR-32 DPR-37 NPF-4 NPF-7 USE OF NOTRUMP TO SATISFY TMI ACTION ITEMS II.K.3.30 AND II.K.3.31 NORTH ANNA UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 SURRY UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 Gentlemen:
In letters dated May 24 and June 4, 1985 regarding Surry and North Anna, respectively9 your staff requested confirmation of Virginia Power plans and schedule for completion of TMI Action Items II.K.3.30 and II.K.3.31.
This letter provides the requested information for the Surry and North Anna Power Stations.
Virginia Power is a member of the Westinghouse Owners Group (WOG), which has referenced NOTRUMP as their new licensing small break LOCA model.
Future analyses performed for the Surry and North Anna plants will use the NOTRUMP code. This completes TMI Action Item II.K.3.30 for Surry Unit Nos. 1 and 2 and North Anna Unit Nos. 1 and 2.
The WOG has established a program to provide the NRC analysis results using the NOTRUMP code as a generic resolution of TMI Action Item II.K.3.31. This approach was proposed in NRC Generic Letter No. 83-35, dated November 2, 1983.
Virginia Power, as a member of the WOG, intends to reference the generic WOG analyses as applicable to the Surry and North Anna plants.
The proposed WOG plan is to perform a complete break
.-----spectrum for one plant type, and a reduced cold leg break spectrum for
/,,,,-------
other plant types.
The objective of this program is to demonstrate on a generic basis the conservatism of the existing WFLASH analyses with respect to the NOTRUMP evaluation model results.
The results of these analyses are currently scheduled to be submitted to the NRC as a WCAP
-*-report by May 21, 1986.
