\\\\,?LLuL\\/L STE\\f/AIIT Vice President Nuclear Operations July 25, 1985 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:
Mr. H. L. Thompson, Jr., Director Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:
VIRGINIA POWER SURRY POWER STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 AGING EVALUATION PROGRAM Nuclear Operations Department Post Office Box 26666 One James Riuer Plaza Richmond, Virginia 23261 VIRGINIA POWER Serial No.85-458 NO/JBL:acm Docket Nos. 50-280 50-281 50-338 50-339 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 NPF-4 NPF-7 In reference to our response in the 1981 Safety Evaluation Report for the Environmental Qualification of Safety-Related Electrical Equipment (North Anna Unit 1, dated August 24, 1981, North Anna Unit 2, dated September 4, 1981, and Surry Units 1 and 2, dated August 24, 1981) and in reference to letter Serial No. 285, dated October 29, 1984, Virginia Power indicated it would incorporate an Aging Evaluation Program.
In reviewing these documents and our integrated surveillance/maintenance programs we find it necessary to clarify this aging evaluation program.
Within our integrated surveillance/maintenance programs, Virginia Power has an equipment failure analysis program which includes environmentally qualified electrical and electronic components. Elements of this failure analysis program include:
- 1) Identification, to the extent practical on site, of failure modes and mechanisms.
- 2) Trending and similarity evaluation of component failures to identify additional corrective actions (e.g. possible adjustment of replacement schedules and applicability of equipment failure to other related equipment.)
It has been determined, as a result of this review, that an additional surveillance/maintenance program directly related to aging evaluation is unnecessary.
We believe that existing failure analysis programs provide adequate aging evaluation.
