License No.85-516 50-280 DPR-32 The purpose of this letter is to provide information on the status of certain Unit 1 modifications related to 10 CFR 50 Appendix R.
On November 30, 1984 (Serial No.
692), Virginia Power submitted schedules for completion of various Appendix R items for Surry Units No. 1 and No. 2. This submittal included schedules for modifications to be completed during the spring 1985 maintenance outage.
On April 29, 1985 the unit was removed from service to perform maintenance to reduce the primary system leakage rate. Since we were within the -window for the required snubber inspection outage, the spring 1985 maintenance outage was started. This was approximately eight (8) weeks earlier than previously planned.
Because Unit No. 2 was in a refueling outage, manpower limitations along with material availability prevented completion of the Appendix R modifications listed in Atta:::hment 1.
We intend to complete these modifications in the fall maintenance outage, but will certainly have them completed by the end of the 1986 refueling outage.

- ATIACHMENT 1 RESCHEDULED 10 CFR SO, APPENDIX R SPRING 1985 MODIFICATIONS All items are numbered in accordance with Volume II, Chapter 6 of the Surry Appendix R reanalysis dated November 30, 1984.
Where required, compensatory measures remain in effect.
I.12 Air Operated Valve Modifications Status:
Manpower limitations due to the Unit 2 refueling prevented performance of this work.
III.9 Installation of Containment Cable Tray Bottom Covers and Fire Stops Status:
Sufficient health physics coverage was not available to support completion of this work.
