WILLMML STEWART Vice President Nuclear Operations e

Nuclear Operations Department Post Office Box 26666 One James River Plaza Richmond, Virginia 23261 March 29, 1985 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:

Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 1 Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA POWER Serial No. 762A NOD/HLM:dn Docket Nos. 50-280 50-281 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 VIRGINIA POWER SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 and 2 STATUS OF NUREG-0737, ITEM II.D.1.2 In our letter dated December 31, 1984 (Serial No. 762), we provided a status update and also described the format being used in finalizing the required engineering for two pressurizer safety and relief valve modifications:

discharge pipe supports and loop seal insulation ovens.

As described, the engineering was divided into two parts per unit.

Each part will be controlled and worked as a Design Change Package (DCP).

Also described was the procedure* by which the engineering is reviewed, revised and approved.

We noted that each of the DCPs would be completed and forwarded to the Station Nuclear Safety and Operating Committee (SNSOC) and approved by March 31, 1985.

The engineering for the "Pressurizer Safety Valve Discharge Pipe Support Modifications" is complete.

All reviews and comments have been incorporated as appropriate, and the DCPs are being forwarded to the SNSOC for final approval.

However, DCPs for the "Pressurizer Safety Valve Loop Seal Insulation Ovens" still require the vendor supplied detailed engineering drawings and the associated installation instructions.

Once these packages are received, they will be reviewed and incorporated into the DCPs.

The delay in receipt of this engineering information was not anticipated in December 1984 when we provided our schedule.

We have reviewed the plan for completion of the required engineering with both our Architect-Engineers and the insulation vendor to de.termine when the final package can be ready for final review.

Our revised schedule, based upon the latest vendor schedule, has the completed DCPs being submitted to the SNSOC by August 30, 1985.
