Vice President Post Office Box 26666 Nuclear Operations OneJames River Plaza Richmond, Virginia 23261 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director March 29, 1985 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation VIRGINIA POWER Serial No. 85-090A NO/GLP:acm Attn: Mr. H. L. Thompson, Jr. Director Docket Nos. 50-280 Division of Licensing 50-281 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 50-338 Washington, D. C. 20555 50-339 License Nos. DPR-32 Gentlemen: DPR-37 NPF-4 NPF-7 VIRGINIA POWER NORTH ANNA UNITS 1 AND 2 SURRY UNITS 1 AND 2 RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 83-28 REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ITEM 4.2.1 AND 4.2.2 CLARIFICATION OF OUR FEBRUARY 15, 1985 RESPONSE On November 16, 1984 and November 23, 1984 Virginia Power received requests for additional information concerning our responses to Generic Letter 83-28, for Surry and North Anna respectively. The requested information was provided to the NRC in a letter dated February 15, 1985.

Our February 15, 1985 response dealing with item 4.2.1 states, in part:

"Procedural inspection activities- of the October 14, 1983 Westinghouse Program are presently performed.on a six month basis at both North Anna and Surry. The twenty items identified by the request are performed by our procedures".

It should be noted that while all of the inspection items recommended by the Westinghouse Owners Group (WOG) program are included in the periodic maintenance performed on the Surry and North Anna reactor trip breakers, not all of these items are required to be performed on a six-month frequency. This is in agreement with both the WOG program and the NRC request for additional information. Only the fifteen procedural items, identified in your request are necessary for performance on a six month inspection basis and in fact may be extended as experience indicates.

  • The remaining five procedural items identified in the NRC request are only necessary for performance on a refueling inspection basis.

Virginia Power intends to perform the fifteen items identified for the six month inspection while the unit is at power and to lengthen the inspection interval when a satisfactory performance is established. The remaining five refueling items will be performed at our normal refueling outage, when the unit is shutdown and when these inspections are possible.
