WILLIAM L STEWART Vice President Nuclear Operations e February 20, 1985 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attn:

ESH:dao Docket Nos.
License Nos.
SURRY POWER STATION RESOLUTION OF SER FOR THE FUEL HANDLING ACCIDENT INSIDE CONTAINMENT Nuclear Operations Department Post Office Box 26666 One fames River Plaza Richmond, Virginia 23261 VIRGINIA POWER 85-046 50-280 50-281 DPR-32 DPR-37 On January 16, 1985, you issued a Safety Evaluation Report (SER) regarding the postulated Fuel Handling Accident Inside Containment (FHAIC) at Surry Power Station, Units 1 and 2.
The SER assumed that the prefilters for the Auxiliary Building Ventilation System complied with Regulatory Guide 1.52, Revision 2, Position C.3.c.
Specifically, the prefilters must have an average atmospheric dustpot efficiency of not less than 45%, and meet UL Class 1 requirements.
Because the prefilters for the Surry Auxiliary Building Ventilation System do not meet this efficiency criteria, you requested that we commit to install acceptable filters. Accordingly, Virginia Power will install acceptable prefilters at the Surry Power Station by December 31, 1985.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us immediately.
Very truly yours, W. L. Stewart PBR3040193 aso220 P
