VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23261 R.H.LEASBURO VICE PRESIDENT NUCLEAR OPERATIONS April 8, 1982 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.
20555 Gentlemen:
CONTAINMENT HIGH RANGE RADIATION MONITOR NUREG 0737 II.F.1 SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 Serial No. 210 NO/SWB:lms Docket Nos. 50-280 50-281 50-338 50-339 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 NPF-4 The purpose of this letter is to report the status of the special (in-site) calibration requirements of the Containment High Range Radiation Monitors as required by Table II.F.1-3 of NUREG 0737.
Vepco' s response to NUREG 0737 stated that "in-site calibration devices/procedures are being developed by the radiation monitor vendor and will be implemented when they become available. 11 Note that this item is the subject of a license condition for North Anna Unit 2.
At the present time the radiation monitor vendor (Victoreen) does not have available devices for in-site electronic calibration of the entire range above lOR/hr and a device to calibrate using a source below lOR/hr.
Victoreen was unable to forecast a date when these calibration devices would be available; however, Victoreen is developing these devices on a priority basis for the industry.
In accordance with our Response to NUREG 0737, Vepco will perform the in-site calibration of the High Range Radiation Monitors on both units, at Surry and North Anna during the first outages of sufficient length following availabi-lity of the calibration units.
