Docket Nos. 50-280 50-281 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 In our letter of April 22, 1980 (Serial No. 370), we provided information concerning the failure of fire pump l-FP-P2 to meet the acceptance criteria of Technical Specification 4.18B.1.f(2).

In that letter, we stated our intention to enlist the services of a repre-sentative of the pump manufacturer to inspect and test Surry's fire pump for signs of possible degradation.

This commitment has been completed and it has been determined that the pump shows no sign of significant or abnormal wear nor does its performance deviate significantly from the original test data.

Also, our investigation of the deviated periodic tests has concluded that the criteria of 250 feet total developed head at 2500 gpm in Specification 4.18.B.-

1.f(2) exceeds both the original design criteria of 244.9 feet at 2500 gpm and the FSAR requirement of 100 psi discharge pressure at 2500 gpm.

Based on this investigation, license amendment application dated October 28, 1980 (Serial No. 862) requesting a change to Technical Specification 4.18.B.-

1. f (2) was submitted requiring that each pump develop a flow equal to or greater than 2500 gpm at a total dynamic head of 231 feet.

Periodic Test 24.12, Fire Pump Flow Rate Test (annual test frequency) was again performed on May 22, 1980.

The pump l-FP-P-2 again failed to meet the existing Technical Specification requirement of 2500 gpm at 250 feet TDH, but exceeded the specifications cited in our pending Technical Specifications change.

It is therefore concluded that the motor and diesel driven fire pumps (FP-P-1 and 2) are operable in that they provide adequate fire protection and meet the ra112000269 011203--..\\
