Dear Mr. Denton:
Serial No.
612 NO/FHT:baw Docket Nos: 50-280 50-281 License Nos: DPR-32 DPR-37 Asymmetric LOCA Loads on Reactor Pressure Vessels Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2 In response to Mr. Victor Stella's letter of January 25, 1978, Virginia Electric and Power Company became a participant in a Westinghouse Owners Group to resolve the subject issue.
Our letter of February 21, 1980, Serial No. 134, Docket Nos. 50-280 and 50-281, provided the status of the evalua-tions to that date and the commitment to provide the results of the Phase-C work (Reactor Vessel Internals) by July, 1980.
This letter is intended to update the status of the evaluation of this issue and reference the Phase-C results, WCAP-9748, submitted by Westinghouse letter NS-TMA-2266, dated June 30, 1980.
As a result of discussions with members of your staff (Mr. Steve Hosford, et. al.), the Owners Group has revised the Mechanistic Fracture Evaluation Study, WCAP-9558, to include consideration of weld metal.
Work in this area continues with the final results expected to be available by September, 1980.
As a partial response to your staff's concerns, Westinghouse has submitted Revision 1 to WCAP-9558 by their letter NS-TMA-2265, dated June 30, 1980.
This Revision 1 to WCAP-9558 responds to questions raised by your staff, with the exception of the evaluation of weld metal.
The evaluation of weld metal will be provided by an addendum to WCAP-9558 by September, 1980.
This completes the scope of work on Phase C of the subject program.
The Owners Group will forward the results of the Mechanistic Fracture Evalua-ll!J>
