NRC Inspections of ASRimpacted Concrete What is ASR?

  • In 2010, ASR was identified in localized areas of Seabrook concrete structures
  • ASR is a chemical reaction in concrete, which occurs over time in the presence of water, between the alkaline cement and reactive silica found in some aggregates.
  • ASR forms a gel that expands causing micro cracks that effect concrete material properties 05/02/2018 5

NRC Inspections of ASRimpacted Concrete Inspection Summary

  • NRC specialist inspections completed every six months; last performed in March 2018
  • License renewal inspection is being conducted this week to followup on the open item related to ASR 05/02/2018 6

ASR License Amendment Request (LAR)

  • In August 2016, NextEra submitted an LAR to revise the current licensing basis requested approval of a methodology to analyze seismic category I concrete structures
  • Application currently under NRC staff review:

- Audit process opened in January 2017

- Staff site visit in June 2017

- Requests for Additional Information (RAIs) Issued on August 4 and October 11, 2017

- Responses to RAIs received on Oct. 3 and Dec. 11, 2017
