IE Bulletin 79-01, OlA 90D 50-280 50-281 DPR-32 DPR-37 Supplemental Response for Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2 ASCO Valve Update

Dear Mr. Stello:

As stated in our initial response to the subject bulletin "Environmental Qualification of Class lE Equipment", Serial No. 090, dated June 25, 1979, we would provide additional information about ASCO valves in a supplemental response.

This letter meets that commitment.

Our earlier letter, Serial No. 466, dated June 14, 1979, reported the failure of certain ASCO solenoid operaied valves to meet-environmental qualificatiori-cr1teria.

At that time we provided the applications of the unqualified valves and corrective actions we had taken and planned to take.

The following indicates the present status of this_ effort for Surry Unit 1 in light of your supplemental Bulletin 79-0lA (Deficiencies in the Environmental Qualification of ASCO Solenoid Valves).

Surry Unit 2, which is presently in an extended outage for Steam Generator Replace-ments, would have a similar list of valves and applications.

Valve replacements and upgrading are scheduled for completion prior to Unit 2 startup following this outage but this work is contingent on timely receipt of replacement parts, now on order.

1.

The following models of ASCO solenoid valves are in use in safety-related systems at Surry Power Station Unit 1.

RV-VG-209A ASCO valves as originally installed in these applications utilized a Buna-"N" seat material, either class 1 or 4 NEMA enclosure and either class A, B or H coil insulation.

The Buna - "N" seat material is reported to degrade in high temperature environments such as those experienced during Design Basis Events.

3.

The following safety related valves which presently use ASCO Model HB30281RF (which has a stainless steel seat, NEMA Class 4 enclosure and Class H coil insulation) have not yet been replaced.

They will be replaced with NP series valves, but are deemed acceptable for interim operation.
