Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for April 2018. This month we captured five Caretta caretta and ten Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. One sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation (non-causal) and there were no mortalities during the month of April. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.
One adult loggerhead was sent to a rehabilitation facility for non-causal injuries this month. On April 7th, an emaciated and lethargic adult male loggerhead was hand-captured from the boat while lingering at the surface of the intake canal.
The animal was in poor condition and its heartbeat was visible. After consultation with FWC, Inwater Research Group biologists transported the turtle partway to rehab (taken to Loggerhead Marinelife Center and later transferred to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Boca Raton).
The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered light-to-moderate amounts of algae during the month of April. Furthermore, the planned power plant outage that began in March concluded and water levels and flow rates in the intake canal have returned to normal operation levels. The new barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2018. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 3/1/04, 11/3/04, 11/21/04, 7/8/05, 8/12/05, 9/13/05, 4/24/06, 9/29/06, 11/19/06, 12/4/06, 12/9/07, 2/10/08, 4/3/08, 9/14/08, 11/26/08, 12/18/08, 12/14/09, 1/11/10, 9/21/10, 7/25/11, 10/13/11, 7/12/12, 12/16/12, 8/19/13, 2/12/14, 5/7/14, 1/4/16, 4/26/16, 10/23/17, 11/14/17, and 4/6/18. No new Inconel tags inserted because of tag scars.
- 2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW180407-01. Emaciated and lethargic adult male loggerhead.
Tail length = 455 mm. The turtle was hand-captured from the boat while lingering at the surface. The heartbeat was visible. After consultation with FWC, Inwater Research Group biologists transported the turtle partway to rehab (taken to Loggerhead Marinelife Center and later transferred to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center).
- 3. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/25/11, 10/21/15, 12/28/15, 3/8/16, 2/2/17, and 4/10/18. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2
{moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 15). Pap growing out of tag scar in right front flipper.
