Dear Mr. Reid:
Re:
St. Lucie Unit 1 Docket No. 50-335 Fuel Inspection Program Q/~At~
I Og 6'
The purpose of this letter is to describe the Eddy Current Test (ECT) fuel inspections we plan to make during the refueling out-age which began on March 28, 1978.
The following is a description of the program as it presently stands:
Basically two types of inspection are planned during the outage:
(a)
Eddy Current Test (ECT) inspections to determine the extent of guide tube wear and, (b)
Visual inspections of a selected number of shimmed fuel assembly upper end fittings with particular attention to the retainer plates which were added during the 1976 Fuel Reconstitution Period.
Amend-ment No.
10 to the operating license requires a
visual inspection of a representative number of re-paired. assemblies to confirm that the retention assemblies are performing as expected.
The ECT program will consist of bobbin coil measurements on all 82 assemblies under CEAs in Cycle 1.
These measurements will be made in the reactor core.
Bobbin coil testing provides data which allow determination of the need for further (azimuthal) eddy current testing, prior to fuel movement.
Contingent on these
- results, we expect to perform azimuthal ECT testing on 10 to 22 assemblies (also while the fuel is still in the core).
These 10 to 22 assemblies will be thos'e exhibiting the worst indications of wear as evidenced by the bobbin coil data.
