603A/101978 PO/DLB:scj Docket Nos: 50-280 50-281 License Nos: DPR-32 DPR-37 This is in response to your letter of December 1, 1978 regarding the Surry Power Station low head safety injection (LHSI) pumps, the outside recirculation spray (ORS) pumps, and the inside recirculation spray (IRS) pumps.

Our intentions with regard to each of these pumps are discussed below:

A.

LHSI Pumps We intend to perform an endurance test on a Unit 2 LHSI pump ~uring the Unit 2 refueling and steam generator replacement outage which is currently scheduled to extend from February 1, 1979 through July 31, 1979. This test will be at reduced flow and for a period of 100 hours0.00116 days <br />0.0278 hours <br />1.653439e-4 weeks <br />3.805e-5 months <br />.

Specific test details and a more definite test date will be provided following a review of the outage activities schedule.

This information will be provided.not later than January 31, 1979.

B.

ORS Pumps The modal analysis which you requested is in progress.

Results will be forwarded not later than January 31, 1979.

C.* IRS Pumps All IRS pumps., n,ot previously inspected, will be inspected. Unit 1 IRS pump 1-RS-P-lA was inspected in May 1978. Unit 1 IRS pump 1-RS-P-lB will be inspected during the current steam generator inspection outage, which started on December 11, 1978 and will extend to approximately January 2, 1979.

Both Unit 2 IRS pumps will be inspected during the upcoming refueling and steam generator replacement outage.

In each case, inspection results will be

We will forward our conclusions regarding extension of the interval between IRS pump tests following the completion of all IRS pump inspections.
