The Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson *
- Chair U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
Madam Chair:
410 Edgewater Road :
Pasadena MD 21122
.: '****March' 12~ 1997 First I want to congratulate you on the courageous job you are doing in trying to enforce safety standards on nuclear power plants. Given the enormous financial and political power of the
- industry, it is encouraging to know that some public officials consider the public interest and public safety as well as the interests of big campaign contributors.
Second, I would like to ask your help in preventing the premature restart of Salem 1 and 2 in New Jersey. Though I do not live there, I was born there and my mother, other family members, and many friends do live within a few miles of that plant. From information I have received from local people, the plant has been operated in an unsafe and irresponsible manner for many years. Local people who attended recent hearings on the restart characterize the attitude ofNRC staff there as one of taking sides with the power company. Although the Salem area is sparsely populated, I think you will find that many locals are very a~iculate and detefmined and such behavior by Federal officials will be reported to their Congressional representatives. I strongly suggest that you intervene in this situation before it becomes another embarrassment to the NRC.
As a career Fed, I sympathize with the many conflicting pressures you and your staff face every, day. I'm sure you want to 'do the right thing'. Thank you for your help.
Sincerely, 9704210123 970415 PDR ADOCK 05000272 H
