April 12, 2018 The Honorable Dan Schinhofen Chairman, Nye County, Nevada Board of County Commissioners Nye County Government Center 2100 E. Walt Williams Drive Suite 100 Pahrump, NV 89048

Dear Mr. Chairman:

In your August 21, 2017 letter to Chairman Svinicki, and during a March 5, 2018 meeting you and other Nye County representatives had with her, you expressed the view that Nye County possesses infrastructure that would permit it to host some or all of the hearings should the Yucca Mountain licensing proceeding be re-started.

With respect to possible venues for future Yucca Mountain licensing-related hearings, in a July 31, 2017 staff requirements memorandum (SRM) (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML17212B393), the Commission stated that the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel (ASLBP) should, among other things, perform a high-level survey of potential Nevada hearing venue sites and begin limited market research. I am writing to advise you that, consistent with the Commissions July 2017 SRM, at some appropriate point in the future when funding permits, we may contact you to arrange a visit to Nye County so that ASLBP and other agency personnel can obtain a better understanding about current county infrastructure. In the interim, if you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Administrative Judge Paul Bollwerk of this office at 301-415-7454 or paul.bollwerk@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/

E. Roy Hawkens Chief Administrative Judge cc: Paul Bollwerk
