GENERIC LETTER 96-05 RESPONSE, PERIODIC VERIFICATION OF DESIGN-BASIS CAPABILITY OF SAFETY-RELATED MOTOR-OPERATED VALVES SALEM UNIT 1, SALEM UNIT 2, AND HOPE CREEK GENERA TING STATIONS DOCKET NOS. 50-272, 50-311, AND 50-354 NRC Generic Letter 96-05, "Periodic Verification of Design Basis Capability of Safety-Related Motor Operated Valves", requests that within 60 days the licensee indicate whether or not they will implement a motor operated valve periodic verification program.

This letter confirms that Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) will implement the requested program at the Salem Unit 1, Salem Unit 2 and Hope Creek Generating Stations.

Generic Letter 96-05 also requests a schedule for completing implementation of the motor operated valve periodic verification program. For Hope Creek Generating Station, the implementation of the program will be complete by Hope Creek's seventh refueling outage, which is currently scheduled to begin in September 1997. For Salem Unit 1 and Salem Unit 2, implementation of the program will be complete by the next refueling outage following restart of each of the units (refueling outage 13 and refueling outage 10, respectively).

A summary description of the motor operated valve periodic verification program will be submitted on or before March 13, 1997 to meet the requested 180 day response.
