- Company E. C. Simpson Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-1700 Senior Vice President - Nuclear Engineering United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:
JUN 2 5.1996 LR-N96120 SALEM UNIT 1 CLOSURE NOTIFICATION LETTER GENERIC LETTER 89-10 SAFETY-RELATED MOTOR OPERATED VALVE TESTING AND SURVEILLANCE SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NO. 1 FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NO. DPR-70 DOCKET NO. 50-272 Pursuant to 1 OCFR50.54(f) and in accordance with Generic Letter 89-10, Item m, this letter serves as notification that the committed programmatic actions taken to address Items a through h of Generic Letter 89-10 have been implemented at Salem Unit 1.
Initial static baseline and differential pressure testing for safety-related motor operated valves at Salem Unit 1 has been completed. Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) has determined that additional testing is necessary for selected valves to ensure sufficient operating margin exists to meet design basis operating requirements.
This additional testing will be completed prior to restart of Salem Unit 1 from the current refueling outage. PSE&G is continuing to review available documentation and evaluate new industry information in order to identify additional longer term operating margin enhancements.
PSE&G understands that this notification along with the Salem Unit 2 notification previously submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by letter LR-N95049 dated March 20, 1995, will initiate discussions relative to a closure review of the program for both Salem units. PSE&G looks forward to providing any support or additional information necessary to close Generic Letter 89-10 for Salem Units 1 and 2.
