RESPONSE TO NRC GENERIC LETTER 95 PRESSURE LOCKING AND THERMAL BINDING OF SAFETY-RELATED POWER-OPERATED GATE VALVES SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. l & 2 HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NOS. DPR-70 1 DPR-75 & NPF-57 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 1 50-311 & 50-354 The NRC issued Generic Letter (GL) 95-07, Pressure Locking and Thermal Binding of Safety-Related Power-Operated Gate Valves, on August 17, 1995.
In response to GL 95-07, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) will perform and complete the Requested Actions in accordance with the 90 day and 180 day schedules contained in the generic letter to ensure that safety-related power-operated gate valves susceptible to pressure locking or thermal binding will be capable of performing their intended safety functions under all modes of plant operation including test configurations.
The Requested Actions will be completed for both Salem Units 1 and 2 and Hope Creek Generating Station.
In accordance with GL 95-07, PSE&G will provide the Requested Information in a followup response by February 13, 1996.
This response will include a summary description and results of the susceptibility evaluations, and any further analyses performed to ensure that susceptible valves are capable of performing their intended safety function.
This response will include the bases or criteria used in determining which valves are or are not susceptible to pressure locking or thermal binding, and will include a listing of the susceptible valves identified.
This response will also fd.entify corrective actions completed, or planned along with the schedule for completion.
If it is determined that susceptible power-operated gate valves are acceptable as is, justification will be provided.
