RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ROD CONTROL SYSTEM FAILURE AND WITHDRAWAL OF ROD CONTROL CLUSTER ASSEMBLIES SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 This letter is to provide Public Service Electric & Gas's (PSE&G' s) response to your Request for Additional Informat,ion (RAI) dated December 19, 1994 regarding Generic Letter 93-04, "Rod Control System Failure and Withdrawal of Rod Cluster Control Assemblies, 10CFR50.54(f)."

Pursuant to the reference letter, the staff requested that the Salem Generating Station commit to the following:

A)

Implementation of the Westinghouse Owners Group (WOG) recommended current order timing modification prior to startup from the next refueling outage that begins later than 3 months from 12/19/94 or provide an alternative long-term plan and schedule, B)

Implementation of the WOG recommended new current order surveillance test(s) to be performed each refueling outage beginning with the next refueling outage that starts later than 3 months from 12/19/94 or provide an alternative long-term plan and schedule, and C)

Inform the staff in writing after "A" and "B" above have been implemented.

As delineated in our initial response to the Generic Letter dated September 21, 1993, PSE&G has been actively working with the WOG on the recommended long term resolution.

For Salem Unit 2, a design change was implemented to incorporate the recommended current order timing change during the eighth refueling outage, (which began in October 1994).

The WOG recommended preventive maintenance tests were also put in.place for Salem Unit 2 at that

time.

These same changes are scheduled for Salem Unit 1 during the twelfth refueling outage to begin in April, 1995.

This letter therefore serves as written notification of the implementation of the recommended changes for Salem Unit 2.

A separate letter will be sent to the staff upon implementation for Salem Unit 1.
