UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555 Docket Nos. 50-272, 50-311, and 50-354 Mr. Steven E. Miltenberger Vice President and Chief Nuclear
_ Officer Public Service Electric and Gas Company Post Office Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038
Dear Mr. Miltenberger:
April 2, 1993
SUBJECT:
CLARIFICATION OF MARCH 3, 1993, MEETING
SUMMARY
FOR FEBRUARY 11, 1993, MEETING WITH THE PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS COMPANY (PSE&G) REGARDING THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, AND HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION On March 3, 1993, the NRC staff sent you a meeting summary for a February 11, 1993 meeting between PSE&G and the NRC staff. The meeting was held at PSE&G's request to permit your staff to provide the NRC with updated information about the erosion/corrosion program currently being implemented at Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, and the Hope Creek Generating Station.
Subsequent discussions with members of your staff indicate that a portion of the meeting summary could be misinterpreted.
The first sentence on page 3 of the meeting summary states "The staff had no objection [to the postulated piping repair] provided the procedure complied with the ASME Code for weld repair.... " Your staff had indicated that this sentence could be interpreted to imply that all pipe repairs must be performed in accordance with the ASME Code.
The above referenced sentence was only intended to apply to those systems that were subject to the ASME Code.
The NRC staff realizes that there are systems at your facilities that are not required to conform to any ASME Code.
For those systems, any repairs should be made in accordance with the design code of record.
Mr. Steven April 2, 1993 We believe the information provided above adequately clarifies the intent of the meeting summary.
