Storing 100,000+ metric tons of highly radioactive, irradiated nuclear fuel in southeast New Mexico is a really bad idea and really bad public policy. We need to do a lot better. Among other things, the highly hazardous radioactive waste that would be stored here will be transported along major rail lines, including the one that runs through my small town in S.E. Iowa.
Make the utilities and government agencies that made this mess take responsibility for it - by constructing on-site dry cask storage so it is properly contained for as long as it needs to be. The science and engineering supporting this alternative are already well established.
