United states Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

NRC BULLETIN 88-11 PRESSURIZER SURGE LINE THERMAL STRATIFICATION SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272.

By letters dated May 15, 1991 and June 17, 1991 (ref: NLR-N91083 and NLR-N91100), Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) committed to perform spring hanger modifications on the pressurizer surge line during the eleventh refueling outage.

Prior to performing these modifications, PSE&G committed to perform walkdowns to determine the locations of temporary

  • supports and shielding necessary to complete the modifications.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the status of this work.

PSE&G has completed the required walkdowns for Salem Unit No. 1 during the tenth refueling outage.. In addition, a plant specific re-analysis effort is underway with Westinghouse Electric

  • Corporation to determine if there is a potential to minimize/eliminate pipe support modifications.

This re-analysis was initiated as an ALARA consideration, because the spring hangers are located in a high radiation area.

The results of this re-analysis will determine future actions by PSE&G with regard to spring hanger modifications.

  • There is a likelihood and a potential based on preliminary results that no modifications will be required on the spring hangers.

The final results are expected from Westinghouse Electric Corporation in June, 1992.

At that time, final determination will be made by PSE&G with regard to pressurizer surge line spring hanger modifications.

If the re-analysis indicates that modifications are still required, they will be completed during the eleventh refueling outage as originally committed.

The results of the walkdowns have been documented for use should modifications be perfbrme~.
