ASME CODE SECTION XI REPAIR, REPLACEMENT AND MODIFICATION PROGRAM SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) hereby submits two requests for use in its Repair, Replacement and Modification Program.

The first request is application of ASME Code Case N389 to Salem Unit No. 1.

The second submittal is a relief request for Salem Unit Nos. 1 and 2 affecting paragraph IWA 5250 (a) (2).

PSE&G requests the application of ASME Section XI Code Case N389 to Salem Unit 1..

Use of this Code Case will permit Salem Unit No. 1 to adopt the 1986 Edition of ASME Code,Section XI for Repairs, Replacements and Modifications.

This will allow alignment with Salem Unit No. 2 which will adopt the 1986 Edition of ASME Code,Section XI upon completion of the sixth refueling outage, currently scheduled to end April 10, 1992.

Code Case N389 which permits the use of later Editions and Addenda of Section XI, either in their entirety or portions thereof, has been incorporated into the 1986 Edition of ASME Code,Section XI.

Regulatory Guide i*.14 7, Revision 8, "Inservice Inspection Code Case Acceptability, ASME Section XI, Div;i.sion 1 11 approves the use of Code Case N389, but requires the licensee to submit for approval, the appropriate edition of the Code that is to be used before the start of the work.

To support implementation of the 1986 ASME Code at the end of the tenth refueling outage for Salem Unit No. 1, currently scheduled to end in mid-June, 1992, your expediency in the consideration of this request would be appreciated.

APR 2 4 1992 Additionally, PSE&G hereby submits a relief request to ASME Code Section XI, Paragraph 5250 (a) (2).

PSE&G requests the use of the referenced paragraph from the ASME Code Section XI, 1989 Edition, 1990 Addenda in lieu of the 1986 wording.

This paragraph provides direction for bolting removal and examination if leakage is identified at a bolted connection during conduct of a system pressure test.

The 1989 Edition of the referenced paragraph states the the bolt closest to the leakage source shall be removed, VT-3 examined and evaluated.

This relief request is being submitted for Salem Unit No. 2 and for Salem Unit No. 1 following approval of ASME Code Case N389.
