REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE ONSITE STORAGE OF POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) hereby transmits its response to the request for additional information regarding the onsite storage of potentially hazardous chemicals.

As discussed with Region I management via telephone conversation on October 21, 1991 a preliminary summary of other toxic chemicals besides Ammonium Hydroxide, not previously evaluated and stored on site, would be provided to the Commission by November 29, 1991.

A safety evaluation is currently being performed regarding the onsite storage of ammonia and will be completed by December 31, 1991 as previously stated in PSE&G letter dated November 6, 1991. to this letter contains the results of PSE&G's preliminary review and identification of other hazardous chemicals stored on-site that have the potential to impact control room habitability.

These chemicals will be evaluated to assess the capability of the control room to remain habitable in accordance with the guidelines contained in Regulatory Guide 1.78 and applicable reference documents.

If evaluations result in possible nonconformances with design the potential discrepancy will be processed in accordance with PSE&Gs engineering discrepancy control program.

50 wt.% Sodium Hydroxide stored in two (2) tanks of 4000 gallons each on El. 88 of the SGS Unit 1 Turbine Building; two (2) tanks of 2250 gallons each on El 88 on the SGS Unit 2 Turbine Building; one (1) tank of 5000 gallons at SGS Non Radwaste Building; one (1) tank of 21,154 gallons adjacent to the HCGS Cooling Tower; two (2) tanks of 16,000 gallons each at El. 54 in the HCGS Turbine Building.
