Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-4700 Vice President - Nuclear Engineering MAY 0 9 19901 NLR-N90064 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:
SALEM REACTOR PHYSICS METHODS REVISION OF NFU-0039, REVISION 1 SALEM UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 On January 20, 1986, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) submitted the report, "Salem Reactor Physics Methods, Volume 1, Model Qualification" (NFU-0039), to the NRC.
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was assigned as the reviewer by the NRC.
on June 19, 1986, BNL transmitted to PSE&G a core analysis standard problem.
The analysis by PSE&G on March 9, 1987, and the evaluation of these computations by BNL on June 24, 1987, served as the NRC's review of sections 1.0 to 3.0 of the report.
This review determined that PSE&G's methodology for analyzing core performance was acceptable.
On March 3, 1987, BNL completed its initial review of "Salem Reactor Physics Methods, Sections 4.0 and 5.0 concerning Reload Safety Evaluations (RSE).
- However, these sections were not approved at that time and the report was held for further revision.
Due to reorganizational issues within PSE&G, the NRC agreed to put the overall review process on hold, (Reference 1)
- In July of 1989, revision of NFU-0039 (Revision 1) was resumed by PSE&G.
In order to facilitate the completion of NRC review, PSE&G plans to revise the current report to address only the reactor physics core modeling methods and associated reliability factors.
This report will also reflect recent 18-month cycle experience.
The RSE methods sections will be deleted and re~ubmitted as a separate report for NRC review and approval.
