REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BULLETIN 88-02, RAPID PROPAGATING CRACKS IN S/G TUBES SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 & 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 & 50-311 Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) hereby provides this written response as a follow-up to the telephone conversations of February 21 and 23, *1990 between the NRC, Westinghouse and PSE&G.

Questions concerning Anti-Vibration Bar (AVB) mapping techniques for Unit 2 Steam Generator 24, Tube R09C35 were identified by the NRC and responded to by Westinghouse.

Westinghouse reviewed the evaluation performed in developing the peaking factors for tube R09C35, and can confirm that the large scale AVB insertion distance plots were made in January 1989.

These plots are based on an evaluation of AVB "projection" values for RC09C35 and neighboring columns of tubes.

Configuration "8d" was developed specifically to model flow peaking for RC09C35 and was tested in the air, cantilever model at the Westinghouse Research and Development Center in January 1989.

The AVB geometry maps presented in Chapter 6 of a typical tube fatigue evaluation WCAP-12090 are intended to conservatively represent the structural support of the steam generator tubing, based on mathematical interpretation of the Eddy Current Test Data, and represent the centerline of the AVB.

The AVB maps presented in Chapter 8 are intended for use in the flow peaking evaluation and are converted to represent the tip of the AVB.
