I January 26, 1989 U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

NLR-N89002 ASME SECTION XI CODE CASE APPLICATION CODE CASE N-460 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 S.10 A request for additional information (RAI) was issued to Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) by the NRC staff on November 9, 1988 regarding the Salem Unit 1 Inservice Inspection (ISI) Program.

Item B of the RAI requested a large amount of information with regard to the obstructions or limitations which will be encountered during the course of the examination of the Category B-F, B-H, B-J, C-A, C-B, C-C, C-F-1, and C-G welds listed in Attachment 5-13 of the Salem Unit 1 ISI Program Plan.

In order to limit the volume of information which would have to be generated in order to respond to this request, PSE&G requests NRC approval for the use of ASME Section XI Code Case N-460, dated July 27, 1988.

This code case states that when the entire examination volume or area cannot be examined due to interference by another component or part geometry, a reduction in examination coverage on any Class 1 or Class 2 weld may be accepted provided.

the reduction in coverage for that weld is less than 10%.

PSE&G concurs with this ASME assessment and believes that the use of this code case would provide an acceptable level of quality and safety.

As the allotted time to respond to the aforementioned RAI is short (response is due February 1, 1989), PSE&G intends to use this ASME Section XI Code Case N-460 and include only weld examination obstructions or limitations of greater than or equal

)

to 10% in the response to Item B in anticipation of the ultimate approval by th.e NRC staff.
