Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-4199 Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer July 12, 1988 NLR-N88097 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

APPENDIX R MODIFICATION SCHEDULE SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NO. 50-272/50-311 PSE&G previously provided the NRC with a schedule for hardware modifications related to Licensee Event Reports87-009 and 87-010 via PSE&G letter NLR-N87221 dated November 25, 1987. In that letter, PSE&G committed to advise you of significant modifications to the schedule. Pursuant to that commitment, please be informed of a revised implementation date for a modification committed to in that letter.

Item G in that letter committed to provide resolution by July 1, 1988, for the potential for simultaneous spurious actuation of the C02 system in all three diesel generator bays.

During the preparation of the design changes, PSE&G discovered that the existing cardox relays might not meet the requirements of the seismic class 1 diesel generator ventilation circuits.

This was reported to the NRC via LER 88-010. A modification to the system redesign was necessitated by the identified seismic concerns and the desire to eliminate the need for local operator response at the diesel generator area. Because of this redesign and its impact on hardware delivery, the modification can not be completed until September 30, 1988. The compensatory measures discussed in our previous letter and LER will remain in place until the modifications are completed. This change in schedule was discussed with Mr. W. Borchardt, Salem Senior Resident Inspector on June 13, 1988.
